Cabinet Door Materials Compared
HDF, MDF, solid wood, thermofoil and melamine can all make useful cabinet doors, but they solve different problems. Compare the surface, style limits, maintenance and finish plan before choosing a replacement door.

HDF and MDF: smooth surfaces for painted profiles
High-density fiberboard and medium-density fiberboard are engineered from wood fibers. Their uniform surfaces make them practical for painted cabinet doors because there is no natural grain pattern to telegraph through the coating. Routed profiles can be cut into the face, which supports Shaker, raised-panel and arched designs.
“HDF” and “MDF” do not describe a finished coating. Raw fiberboard still needs proper preparation, while a primed door still needs final prep and paint. Ask about material thickness, profile limitations and the coating system you or your painter will use. Our custom replacement doors are offered in raw or primed HDF.
Solid wood: natural grain with natural movement
Solid-wood doors are the strongest fit when visible grain, stain color and wood species are the design goal. Because wood responds to humidity, rails, stiles and center panels can move slightly across seasons. Matching an older stained kitchen also involves species, grain, stain and aging—not just the door profile.
Thermofoil: a wrapped finished surface
Thermofoil doors generally use a shaped fiberboard core wrapped with a heat-formed film. The surface arrives finished and can cover routed details without paint. Heat near ovens and damage at an edge are important considerations, and matching an older discontinued film can be difficult.
Melamine: a practical flat-panel surface
Melamine uses a decorative resin-saturated surface bonded to a panel core. It works best for modern slab cabinet doors and drawer fronts where the flat face and edge treatment are part of the design. Review our flat-panel and slab door guide for installed examples and ordering considerations.

Questions before selecting a door
Is HDF the same as solid wood?
No. HDF is an engineered fiberboard with a uniform surface; solid wood has natural grain and responds differently to humidity.
Is primed HDF already painted?
No. Primer prepares the surface for final paint. Your painter still applies the color and finish coats.
Can every profile be made in every material?
No. Material, thickness, construction method and minimum dimensions limit which profiles are practical.
How do I match an existing cabinet door?
Send front, back, edge and hinge photos plus exact dimensions. A visual profile match does not guarantee the same material or finish.
